Brainerd’s Brushstrokes – Acrylic Abstract Flowers: Part 2

Thursday, May 27, 2021

Welcome to my Art Thursdays B.R.E.A.T.H.S. blog post where I invite you into my private art studio. I started off a few weeks ago introducing some of my first art pieces in my preteens with drawing and poetry, and mid twenties with my introduction to watercolor painting large scale realistic flowers. In my thirties and forties, I transitioned into acrylic paints and some mixed media. Below is a collage of a painting showing I start with the background, then dark colors, and finish off with light colors.

Brainerd’s Brushstrokes – Acrylic Abstract Flowers: Part 2

Last week, I showed you four of my acrylic abstract flowers I painted from 2015-2017. This week, I am going to show you four more acrylic flower paintings from 2015-2019, three in vases on 16×20 canvas, and one with mixed media (acrylic and glitter glue on 10×10).  In 2019, I started experimenting with mixed media again such as glitter glue, stickers, paper, leaves, and feathers. Below are four of my acrylic abstract flower paintings chronological order, oldest first. The most recent painting is the only mixed media and difficult to get pictures because the sparkles in the glue are so shiny so I made a video of the process (scroll to end of post or click here to go to YouTube).

Description of “Mixed Media Abstract Flowers”

In summer of 2019, I acquired some cute used armchairs and a rug. I didn’t have any art that matched, so I made some using some inspiration from both pieces (top pic is the rug, bottom pic is the fabric on the armchairs). For this set, I started with the flowers from the rug (I normally start painting the background first) and then painted the design from the armchairs when the flowers were dry. The last thing I added was the sparkly glitter glue.

  1. Love all your paintings, and those mixed media black and white flowers especially…. now, I am inspired to go look for bits and pieces of fabric from my teenager’s sewing sessions 🙂

  2. Those are all beautiful! I love the contrast of the bright background with the dark vase and white flowers. All are absolutely stunning, you are so talented!
