About Me

Hello, I am Dr. Jaime Brainerd, Ed.D., my specialty is alternative education. During my youth, I grew up in a rural area outside Portland, Oregon with an insatiable curiosity for how we learn. Observing my teachers from an early age, I would often raise my hand to ask questions like, “can we go outside to learn about nature,” “can we go to a bank to learn about money,” or “why do we have to learn from the same person with limited knowledge for six hours a day, five days a week, and for nine months out of the year?” Our education system was a mess (still is) and I was determined to fix it (still am).

When I was in high school, the internet came out to the public for the first time. I found ways to get on the internet at high school, at the public library, and when most of the USA was asleep, I would go to my church to log on. I was drawn to the internet as it had an abundance of information and ways we could learn more, at any time, from any place, from anyone, and at any age that can use the tool. I found someone in Toronto Canada in a public chatroom who was willing to teach me about everything online. This opened my eyes to how I would be changing our education system with this very medium, the internet. I wrote a letter to myself explaining how I knew my life’s mission because God had spoken to me and that I had to plan how I would change the world knowing it would take some time, and so I did just that.

Upon completing high school in 1996, I mapped out my college plans and started courses at community colleges in Portland, Oregon. After three years, I transferred to a Lutheran college, Concordia University, also located in Portland. It took me another two years to complete my bachelors degree in education in 2001. I worked as a private school teacher in Portland Archdiocese for a year 2001-2002, and Beaverton Public Schools 2002-2003 for one year as a public school teacher, before moving to California to teach for Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in June 2003.

From 2003 to 2020, I taught in an urban area called LAUSD, and I worked as a teacher, technology coordinator, and technology coach. While working for LAUSD, I went back to school for my master’s of education in 2005 at University of Phoenix Online (UoPo), and graduated in 2006. In 2009, I started my doctorate in educational leadership and technology at UoPo, while I also obtained an online facilitating job teaching master’s level education courses at UoPo. I completed my doctorate in 2020 and resigned from both teaching jobs to move onto my next career of authoring.

During the crazy first year of Covid in 2020, I was able to focus on completing my doctorate and starting up my educational nonprofit, Global Alternative Learning Systems. After finishing those two tremendous tasks, I decided it was time to take a trip across the United States to plant my seed! I mapped out my first trip starting September 1, 2020 driving through 43 states until November 15, 2020. I rested at my home base with my family in Oregon for the next month and a half, then I started the second part of my USA driving tour to complete all 48 mainland states from January 1, 2021 through April 8, 2021.

Now, we are into this second crazy year of Covid in 2021 and I am gracefully shifting into my new career as an author. Welcome to my writing world I have titled, Dr. Brainerd B.R.E.A.T.H.S. This is where I will be sharing my breaths each day with intention:

B-beauty Monday’s
R-reading Tuesday’s
E-education (financial) Wednesday’s
A-art Thursday’s
T-travel Friday’s
H-health Saturday’s
S-self care Sunday’s

Looking forward to this new authoring journey, learning how to manage a website, creating daily blog posts, publishing my writings, digging into social media, working with other bloggers in the Ultimate Blogging Challenge (UBC), and inspiring others.

Sending all my love,
Dr. Jaime Brainerd
